1. Toner, essence and micellar water — the job that changes most
A disposable cotton round is not accidentally absorbent; it is manufactured to be. Raw cotton fibre is coated in natural waxes and repels water. The purification process that turns it into a cosmetic pad scours it in a sodium hydroxide solution that saponifies those waxes and bleaches what is left, leaving pure cellulose — wax-free, wettable, and thirsty.
That absorbency is a feature when you are blotting. It is a tax when you are applying. Every pump of toner that soaks into layers of fluffed cellulose is a pump that never reaches your face, and the standard consumer response — a second pump, then a third — is what makes this the single job where a thin, flat reusable round changes the arithmetic most.
Honest limit: this article did not find an independent, published head-to-head absorption test between a woven cotton-lyocell round and a nonwoven disposable pad. The mechanism is documented; the magnitude, for these two specific products, is not. Treat "uses less product" as directional, not as a measured multiple.
2. Nightly removal of SPF and base makeup — the volume job
This is where the friction lives, and — contrary to the usual pitch — not where the money is. A heavy routine, SPF in the morning and base makeup over it, both coming off at night, routinely takes two or three pads per evening. At the 2.1 cents a pad quoted above, that is somewhere around $16 to $23 a year in disposables, against $16.00 for one set of seven LastRound. Year one is close to break-even. LastObject states that one set replaces approximately 1,750 single-use pads over its lifetime — the brand's own arithmetic of seven rounds at 250 washes each, not an independent test result.
So the argument here is not cost. It is force. A four-week controlled study of 35 women with mild facial atopic dermatitis found that switching to a makeup remover that required less rubbing significantly reduced dryness, scaling, irritation, erythema and itchiness, and significantly lowered transepidermal water loss — the authors concluded many patients worsen their own skin by rubbing hard to compensate for a cleanser that is not doing the work. The American Academy of Dermatology puts the same principle in one published line: “Resist the temptation to scrub your skin because scrubbing irritates the skin.” On a routine that needs two or three passes a night, that criterion outweighs the cents — which is just as well, because the cents are a wash.
3. The eye area — a win with a hard limit
Eye-area removal is a dwell-time job more than a friction job: the press-and-hold technique works by leaving the remover in place long enough to dissolve the product before a single wipe, rather than by dragging. A round that surrenders less of the remover to itself supports that technique. But the round cannot finish the job, and pretending otherwise would be the easy lie here. The American Academy of Ophthalmology's published removal advice is to “use a clean cotton swab to brush along the base of the eyelashes to get the last resistant debris of eye makeup off” — a lash line is a precision job, and a round is a surface tool.

4. Patting on essence or hydrating toner — the job we cannot call
The intuition here is that a wet nonwoven pad sheds fluff onto damp skin and a woven cellulose round does not. It is a reasonable intuition, and this article originally scored it as a win. It should not have.
No published test comparing fibre shed between a nonwoven disposable pad and a woven cellulose round turned up, and the general shedding literature does not settle it: the comparisons that exist tend to set cotton against fibre blends, which is the wrong axis for this question — the disposable pad is pure cotton and LastRound is 30% cotton, 70% lyocell, so a cotton-versus-blend result would flatter our product for reasons that have nothing to do with weave. Undecided is the correct verdict, and one of the five criteria therefore decides nothing. If a real comparative test appears, this row moves.
5. Travel — genuinely split
A reusable round only works inside a laundry loop. On a three-day trip with a sink and a radiator, it is fine. On a week of flights with a wet round in a sealed pouch and no wash cycle, the disposable is simply the better product, and the maintenance debt is real. LastObject's stated care routine, set out on its refill page, is “Rinse or wash after each use”, machine washing at up to 60°C in the supplied mesh bag, no bleach or harsh solvents, and no fabric softener — the brand's reasoning on softener being that it coats the fibres and reduces absorption. If your honest answer is that you will not do that on the road, pack disposables for the road.
6. Active breakouts and inflamed skin — the disposable's category, or no tool at all
The clearest reason not to reach for a reusable round is not hygiene folklore. It is that the American Academy of Dermatology's published acne guidance describes applying cleanser with the fingertips, “as scrubbing with washcloths, sponges, and other tools can irritate your skin”. That guidance does not distinguish between disposable cotton, reusable cotton, or lyocell — it rules out the tool, not the material, and it rules out the disposable pad just as firmly. Broken skin and active skin infection are a clinical question rather than a product-comparison one, and a clinician's advice for a specific person outranks any ranking on this page.
7. Acetone nail polish remover — last place, and not close
Acetone is a non-solvent for cellulose: cellulose is insoluble in water and most organic solvents, and acetone is specifically used as a non-solvent in cellulose processing. So the fibre itself would survive. That is not the argument, and the brand's own care line settles the question faster than any chemistry does: LastObject's refill page states “Do not use bleach or harsh solvents”, and acetone-based remover is exactly that. The rest follows — nail polish is a pigmented resin engineered to bond to a surface, no published test of repeated acetone-and-polish cycling on this blend exists, and the round then goes into a mesh bag and through a wash cycle with your clothes. Nail polish belongs on a disposable pad. This is the one job where the single-use product is simply the right product, and any reusable brand that claims otherwise is selling past the evidence.
The wash debt, stated plainly

What belongs here is the claim that sits above it: LastObject's own 60°C figure is described by the brand as the temperature at which common bacteria and viruses on fabric are eliminated — the brand's wording rather than an independent measurement, and a temperature above anything that laundering experiment actually tested.
One material claim deserves the same treatment, because it is the one most often overstated. LastObject describes the rounds as home compostable at end of life, and its refill page places that next to a certification: “OEKO-TEX certified, machine-washable to 60°C, compostable at end of life.” OEKO-TEX is a textile certification — it concerns tested-for-harmful-substances status in fabric — and it is not a composting standard, so it is not evidence for the compostability half of that sentence. No composting certification, standard or testing body is named on either page, so home-compostability stands as a manufacturer claim rather than a verified property, and it should be read that way until a certificate with a name and a number is published. What is independently documented is narrower: in seawater trials at Scripps, natural and regenerated cellulose fibres biodegraded completely in roughly 35 days, while polyester, polypropylene and PLA — the “biodegradable” plastic — showed no visible breakdown after 428 days. Seawater is not a compost bin, and that study's headline finding is about how badly PLA performs, not about how well anything composts at home.
