Machine-Washing Reusable Cotton Rounds: Temperature, Program, and Drying

TL;DR — Wash reusable cotton rounds at 104°F (40°C) on a normal cycle, in a fine-mesh bag, with an enzyme detergent, and air-dry them flat. That is the mildest routine that met a 2025 home-laundering trial's hygiene benchmark regardless of how the textile was dried, and it sits well under the 140°F (60°C) ceiling LastObject rates its LastRound pads for. The mesh bag is mechanical protection, not hygiene — any fine-mesh delicates bag does the same job. And a reusable round you don't wash is a worse object than a disposable you throw away.

Every element of it traces back to a published finding or a brand care instruction, and the temperature sits 36°F below LastObject's rated ceiling — comfortably inside what the fabric is built for.

Everything below is the reasoning, including the parts that don't flatter a reusable product. Reusables have a maintenance debt that disposables simply don't carry, and the honest version of this article says so out loud before it says anything else.

Temperature is the lever — but it is not the only lever

Temperature does most of the heavy lifting in laundry hygiene, and the evidence points at a fairly narrow band. A 2025 trial that deliberately contaminated a reusable, skin-contact textile and then washed it in ordinary domestic machines found that cycles at 104°F (40°C) and 140°F (60°C) were "highly effective, with absolute values of CFU close to zero", while at 86°F (30°C) the result depended entirely on drying: efficient bacterial removal was observed in combination with 30 minutes of tumble drying, but not when the swatches were air-dried. The specific failure was 86°F with a non-biological detergent followed by air drying, which left counts as high as 17,165 CFU per swatch.

So 104°F is not the lowest temperature that works — it is the lowest temperature in that trial that worked without depending on a tumble dryer. If you air-dry, which is what a cotton round wants, 104°F is the setting the study supports.

Two limits on how far that transfers. The study used cloth facepieces contaminated with respiratory and environmental organisms — not makeup, not sebum, not skin flora — so it is a temperature-and-detergent lesson rather than a direct verdict on cotton rounds. And it reports no data on how many wash cycles the fabric itself survived; the authors note the test facepiece was not artificially aged.

The cooler end is murkier than a single number suggests. A review of textiles in healthcare settings reports that Staphylococcus aureus can survive on cotton for up to 21 days, and quotes UK Department of Health and NHS policy stating that washing with detergent at 86°F (30°C) eliminates MRSA and most other gram-positive bacteria. That second figure needs its caveat stated in full, because it is the weakest-sourced number in this article and it happens to be the one that flatters cold washing: the review notes the policy rests on an unpublished study, and the same authors go on to cite more recent work showing microorganisms surviving low-temperature laundering. Treat the 86°F figure as policy language, not as a measurement. The 21-day figure has its own limit in the other direction — it describes dry, unwashed, heavily seeded fabric in a lab, not a round you rinsed and hung up.

There is also a workaround for people whose machines run cold. Controlled laundry research reports that the loss of hygiene effectiveness at lower temperatures can be compensated by detergents containing activated oxygen bleach, or by extending the wash cycle time. Worth naming a US-specific catch: activated oxygen bleach is common in European powder detergents and uncommon in American liquids. For most US households the usable half of that finding is the longer cycle rather than the bleach additive — and for these rounds specifically the additive is ruled out anyway, since the LastRound Refill page's care line reads "Do not use bleach or harsh solvents." Note also that only the study's abstract is publicly readable, so the per-temperature reduction figures behind it are not independently checkable here.

Makeup is a grease problem before it's a germ problem

This is the part most care guides skip. What is actually on a used round is foundation, sunscreen, sebum, and pigment — an oily, filmed soil, not a bacterial one. Oil is why cold water alone leaves rounds looking gray and feeling slightly waxy even when they smell clean.

The mechanism is enzymatic. Lipases break down triglycerides, which are among the components of sebum and of many cream makeup bases, and one characterization study measured 62% oil removal from soiled cotton fabric at 104°F (40°C) using a lipase preparation. That figure comes from lab-optimized conditions — olive oil, a specific detergent, a 45-minute wash — not from a household machine full of mascara. Treat it as evidence for the mechanism, not as a promised outcome, and note that no source here measures lipase performance against human sebum specifically.

Which produces an uncomfortable tension worth stating plainly: enzyme detergents are the right answer for grease, and fragrance-free, enzyme-free "free and clear" detergents are what people with reactive skin are usually steered toward. Those are not the same product. If you use a mild non-enzyme detergent, don't also drop to the coldest setting and hang the rounds in a damp bathroom — that is precisely the combination that failed the 2025 benchmark. Pick 104°F, or pick a longer cycle, or both.

What the mesh bag actually does

It stops small flat objects from disappearing into a duvet cover, getting wrapped around a zipper, or riding the drum wall for a whole cycle. That's it. It is mechanical protection and organization, and it is genuinely useful — seven small rounds loose in a family load is how people lose three of them.

What it is not: a hygiene intervention. Nothing in the laundry literature I could find measures whether a wash bag extends the service life of a small textile, and no published study compares a branded bag against a generic one. So here is the straight version: any fine-mesh delicates bag does this job. If you already own one, use it.

LastObject states that a mesh wash bag is included with LastRound, $16.00 at LastObject's US store, 18 August 2026. The LastRound Refill, $9.00 carries the care line "Rinse or wash after each use," which is the routine step the bag exists to support. That bundling is convenient rather than exclusive. Buy it for the rounds, not for the bag.

Drying is half the routine

A round that goes into a drawer at 90% dry is the actual hygiene failure in a reusable routine. LastObject specifies its rounds as a blend of 30% cotton and 70% lyocell — a wood-derived fiber — machine washable up to 140°F (60°C), and rates each pad for approximately 250 wash cycles. Cellulose fibers hold water well, which is exactly why they work as a makeup remover and exactly why they need real drying time. Lay them flat, spread out, somewhere with air movement. Not stacked. Not in a sealed pouch.

This is also where the brand's explicit chemical instructions land. LastObject says not to use fabric softener, "as it coats the fibres and reduces absorption" — a performance instruction rather than a hygiene one, and consistent with how cellulose behaves. The refill page adds the other half: "Do not use bleach or harsh solvents." That one rules out the stain shortcut people reach for when rounds start looking gray, which is worth knowing before you reach for it.

How to tell when a round is finished

There is no counter, and pretending otherwise would be marketing. For a round, the signals that matter are thinning, fraying, and pigment that no longer washes out; a stain that lifts in the next cycle is cosmetic, not terminal, and Stained Reusable Rounds covers that distinction in detail.

Fabric does measurably degrade with washing. A 2023 study tracking particle shedding across wash cycles found cotton fabric shedding in the 0.3–0.5 µm size fraction rising from roughly 1.97 million particles after 3 washes to roughly 4.35 million after 50. Those are counts for that one size band, not total shedding. The work also measured woven cotton and cotton-polyester in a laboratory rig, not a cotton-lyocell round, and particle count is not the same thing as "worn out." It does establish the direction of travel.

LastObject's 250-cycle figure, and the 1,750-disposable-round replacement claim derived from it (7 rounds × 250 washes), are LastObject's own arithmetic and are not independently verified. LastObject also describes the rounds as "home compostable at end of life," and the refill page repeats it: "When the rounds are fully spent, they're home-compostable." That is the brand's claim as written. The pages name no composting certification, no test standard, and no testing institution behind it.

The refill page does name a certification — "OEKO-TEX certified, machine-washable to 60°C, compostable at end of life" — but OEKO-TEX is a textile certification concerned with tested-for-harmful-substances in fabric, not a composting standard, and it says nothing about how the round breaks down in a garden bin. Reading it as backing for the compost claim would be a category error. So the compostability belongs in the "brand claim" column rather than the "documented property" column until a composting standard is cited — and it is worth saying that no industrial-composting certification would settle it either, since a home-compost claim and an industrial-compost standard describe different conditions.

When LastRound is the wrong choice

Required reading, not a disclaimer.

When you won't wash them. This is the big one. Research on used cosmetic products has found reusable, skin-contact applicators that rarely get cleaned carrying bacterial loads above 10⁶ CFU per ml — our hygiene deep-dive walks through that evidence and its limits in full. The behavioral lesson stands on its own: an unmaintained reusable is a worse object than a disposable.

On actively breaking-out or infected skin. The American Academy of Dermatology's published acne guidance describes applying cleanser with the fingertips, noting that scrubbing with washcloths, sponges, and other tools can irritate skin. That guidance is written about every pad, cloth, and sponge in the category — ours included, and disposables too. The contrast it draws is tool versus no tool, not reusable versus single-use.

Nail polish. Acetone and reusable cellulose textile are a bad pairing, and the brand's own care line rules out harsh solvents outright. A small box of disposables is the right tool for polish removal — that is the correct answer, not a concession.

Travel without laundry access. A week of used rounds in a wash bag with no machine at the end of it is not a system. Disposables are the right tool for that trip.

Precision work. A flat round about 7 cm (2.75 inches) across — LastObject's own figure, which the brand says matches a standard disposable pad — cannot fix a smudged wing of eyeliner. The conditional recommendation

If you will actually run the wash — 104°F, normal cycle, mesh bag, enzyme detergent, air-dried flat — LastRound is a straightforward buy, and the refill at $9.00 is a cheaper way to keep it going than replacing the full set at $16.00. If that routine sounds like something you'd skip four weeks out of five, the evidence says buy disposables and don't feel bad about it. A washing routine you don't run is not a sustainability decision. It's just a dirty round.
