It reports what those sources say; it is not medical advice, and it does not tell you what to do near your own eye. Check 1: Does your fix rely on pressure?
The habit: the smudge didn't come off, so you press harder and rub faster.
What the sources say: the American Academy of Dermatology's face-washing guidance tells consumers to resist scrubbing because scrubbing irritates skin, and specifically warns against pulling hard on the delicate skin around the eyes. The clinical data points the same way: a 2021 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology followed 35 women with mild atopic dermatitis who switched to a makeup remover that required less rubbing force, and found measurably reduced dryness, irritation, redness, and water loss through the skin within four weeks. The study is small and its participants had sensitive skin to begin with — but its core finding is that the friction, not just the chemistry, was doing damage the participants never noticed.
Verdict: myth. Published guidance treats force as the problem, not the solution.
Check 2: Does your fix involve saliva?
The habit: no remover within reach, so you lick the swab or the fingertip first.
What the sources say: no manufacturer's published instructions and no professional-body guidance endorses saliva as a makeup solvent — and the contamination research explains the direction of the problem. An FDA laboratory survey of 93 eye-area cosmetics, published in 2018, found 60% of products completely free of microbial growth as sold and only 8% above 100 CFU per gram: eye makeup leaves the factory clean. A 2020 study in the Journal of Applied Microbiology then measured where the microbes come from — 79–90% of donated, used cosmetic products were contaminated with bacteria, and used makeup sponges averaged over a million CFU per milliliter, with 93% of them never cleaned. The load builds during use, from the user. Deliberately adding a body fluid to that chain moves everything in the wrong direction.
Verdict: myth. Contamination research consistently points from the user to the tool to the eye area — saliva shortens that route.
Check 3: Does your fix have a fingernail in it?
The habit: a dried smudge gets scraped off with the edge of a nail.
What the sources say: a 2015 anatomical study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal measured skin thickness across 39 facial regions and confirmed that eyelid skin is the thinnest on the face — the upper medial eyelid's dermis averaged about 759 micrometers, the least of any region measured. The AAD's warning from Check 1 applies with interest here: its guidance is to cleanse with fingertips and gentleness precisely because the skin around the eyes tolerates so little pulling. A nail edge concentrates force onto the region with the least structural margin for it. It is also, per the logic of Check 2, an uncleaned tool.
Verdict: myth. The thinnest skin on the face is the worst possible place to deploy the sharpest edge on your hand.
Check 4: Is plain water your only solvent?
The habit: water fixes everything, so it should fix a smudge — especially on the way out the door.
What the sources say: a 2024 study in Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology of 225 eye-cosmetic users found that plain tap water was the least effective removal method tested, and that failing to remove eye makeup at day's end was significantly associated with allergic conjunctivitis. For waterproof formulas the mismatch gets expensive: a 2013 cross-sectional survey of 128 mascara users found the highest rate of reported eyelash loss — 27% — among those who used plain water to remove waterproof mascara. Both studies are weak individually: self-reported, single-region, no controlled comparison. But they lean the same way, and no manufacturer of waterproof eye makeup lists water as its removal method.
Verdict: myth-leaning. The evidence is thin, but it all points against water as a universal solvent — the product's own label is the better guide.
Check 5: Does your fix happen at the lash line — or past it?
The habit: chasing a smudge right up to, or inside, the lash line.
What the sources say: the American Academy of Ophthalmology's consumer guidance is to apply eye makeup "outside the lash line, away from the eye" so the eyelid's oil glands don't get blocked. The migration research suggests why placement matters so much: a 2015 pilot study tracked pencil eyeliner applied inside the lash line and observed it reaching maximum contamination of the tear film within 5 to 10 minutes of application, while application outside the lash line migrated slower and less. That study had exactly three participants, so the number deserves suspicion — but the professional guidance built on top of it is unambiguous and has stood since.
Verdict: open on the science, settled in the guidance. The evidence base is small, but every authority that has looked at it says the same thing about placement.
Check 6: Is the tool you fix with actually clean?
The habit: the fixing tool lives loose in the makeup bag, gets used, and goes back in.

What the sources say: the same 2020 microbiology study from Check 2 found that 93% of the used makeup sponges it examined had never been cleaned at all, and 64% had been dropped on the floor and used again. Meanwhile the AAO's makeup-safety guidance specifies a clean swab for work along the base of the lashes — the adjective is doing real work in that sentence. A precise fix with a contaminated tool passes the technique check and fails the hygiene one.
Verdict: not a myth — the opposite. This is the check almost nobody runs, and the measured numbers say it is the one most people would fail.
Check 7: Are you using the right tool for the job at all?
The habit: whatever is closest — a fingertip, a tissue corner, a cotton swab from the bathroom jar.
What the sources say: the AAO's endorsement of swab-at-the-lash-base technique in Check 6 is about the shape of the tool as much as its cleanliness: a controlled tip reaches a two-millimeter smudge without dragging remover across the whole lid, which is exactly the low-force approach Checks 1 and 3 demand. What that tool should be — a disposable cotton swab, a fingertip, or a washable precision swab with a soft TPE tip — depends on the moment: a wet eyeliner correction, a dried mascara dot, and an end-of-day cleanup are different jobs with different tolerance for lint, moisture, and reuse. Ranking those moments — which of the seven common precision moments in a makeup routine actually reward a dedicated reusable tool, and which are fine with whatever is closest — is its own exercise, and it is the natural next step once your technique has passed the first six checks.
Verdict: open. The right answer is moment-dependent, which is precisely why it deserves a ranking rather than a rule.
