TL;DR — Wash and drying habits, not reuse itself, are what keep a reusable pad hygienic — and the evidence behind the standard wash advice is softer than it sounds. The widely repeated figures (detergent at 30 °C eliminates MRSA; 60 °C for 10 minutes removes almost all microorganisms) are UK policy recommendations whose underlying data has never been published, and the same 2020 review cites a study in which E. coli and S. aureus survived 40 °C domestic wash cycles. In a 2025 home-laundering test, exactly one combination failed the hygiene benchmark: cold wash, enzyme-free detergent, air drying. Drying matters as much as washing. And there are real situations where a reusable pad is the wrong choice: active skin infection or broken skin, acne-prone skin where dermatology bodies advise fingertips over tools, shared use, acetone, and any stretch where you cannot launder it.

Figure 1 — The three wash numbers, and what backs each
The hygiene of a reusable makeup pad is decided by the wash, not by the reuse — and the evidence behind the wash numbers everyone repeats is thinner than the advice sounds. A 2020 review of textiles as infection routes reports that Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and E. faecium survive on cotton for 21 days when the fabric is left alone, and reports the UK policy position that washing with detergent at 30 °C eliminates MRSA and most other gram-positive bacteria, and that washing at 60 °C for 10 minutes removes "almost all microorganisms" — while stating plainly that the data underpinning those recommendations has not been published. The same review then cites a 2017 experiment in which E. coli and S. aureus survived 40 °C domestic wash cycles at three to four log₁₀ CFU on inoculated swatches.
So the two halves of the picture are not symmetrical. The 21-day figure describes dry, heavily inoculated, unwashed textile in a laboratory — not a pad that gets rinsed and laundered. The wash figures facing it are policy guidance resting on an unpublished study, and the closest published test points the other way. The gap between the two numbers, and the softness of the numbers filling that gap, is the entire subject of this article.
This is a reference page, written for people who already own reusable pads and want to know where the honest limits are. It is descriptive throughout: where dermatology and public-health bodies have published advice, that advice is reported, not restated as instruction.
The measurement behind the "reusables are gross" instinct
The instinct is not irrational, and it has a number attached to it. A peer-reviewed study of used cosmetic products found that beauty blenders carried an average bacterial load above 10⁶ CFU per ml, against 10²–10³ CFU per ml in the other product categories, and that 93% of the blenders had never been cleaned while 64% had been dropped on the floor and used again. Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and Citrobacter freundii were among the isolates.
Read the variable carefully. The dirtiest object in the makeup bag was the one nobody ever washed — a damp, porous sponge stored wet. A 2025 study of cosmetic brushes among users in Saudi Arabia points the same way: 44.3% of 370 surveyed users said they rarely clean their brushes, and 27.8% reported acne, irritation or infections.
One caveat belongs in the running text: CFU counts are contamination, not illness — nobody in either study was shown to have become sick. What the two studies establish, within the sampling limits listed at the end of this article, is that measured contamination in beauty tools tracks with maintenance behavior, not with reusability as a property.
Temperature, detergent, and which one is actually doing the work
The default assumption is that heat is the variable. It is one of them, not the only one — and, as the opening section shows, the temperature thresholds in circulation are recommendations rather than demonstrated thresholds.
A review in Applied and Environmental Microbiology summarizes the consensus position that temperatures of 40 °C to 60 °C and/or bleach are needed for more resistant pathogens, and that enzymes and bleach become essential in washes below 20 °C. A controlled laundry experiment from a household-hygiene group found the trade is substitutable: the loss of hygiene effectiveness at lower temperatures can be compensated for with detergents containing activated oxygen bleach, or by extending the wash cycle. Notably, Candida albicans was virtually unaffected by that bleach, so the substitution is not universal.
The most directly relevant test is recent: a 2025 home-laundering study of reusable face coverings found that every wash combination met its hygiene benchmark except 30 °C with enzyme-free detergent followed by air drying — that study, its caveats, and why the failing combination is precisely the setup recommended to sensitive skin are unpacked in our machine-washing guide.
There is a mechanism behind the enzyme point. Triglycerides — the main component of sebum and of many makeup bases — are not removed by alkaline washing alone; lipase enzymes achieved 62% oil removal from soiled cotton fabric at 40 °C under optimized laboratory conditions. Real household machines are not optimized laboratories, and olive oil is not waterproof mascara, but the direction holds.
This matters more in winter than in July. Winter routines carry heavier lipid loads — balm cleansers, richer moisturizers, occlusive layers — and lipid is exactly what a cold, enzyme-free wash handles worst. And in the US, a quantitative risk assessment of household laundry used a median cold-wash temperature of 14.4 °C as its baseline, which is roughly where American machines actually run. That puts the failing combination from the 2025 trial — cold wash, no enzymes, air drying — closer to the American default than to the exception.
Drying is not the afterthought
Damp is the growth condition. A study of bacterial life cycles in textiles found that sebum is a key nutrient source for bacteria in fabric and that higher moisture regain in cotton extends the period over which bacteria can grow. That is an honest disadvantage of any cellulose pad, including this one: cellulose holds water. A pad left folded in a wet pile between uses is the beauty-blender failure mode in miniature, regardless of what the fiber is.
The sequence is also settled. US federal infection-control guidance states that thorough cleaning is required before disinfection, that friction and fluidics are the two essential components of manual cleaning, and that a neutral or near-neutral pH detergent generally provides the best material compatibility. That guidance is written for hospital instruments, not for textiles in a bathroom sink; what carries over is the ordering principle — clean first, and friction does the work.
Three claims that do not survive contact with the sources
"Antibacterial cleaner gets them cleaner." The US Food and Drug Administration issued a final rule in 2016 under which 19 active ingredients, including triclosan and triclocarban, can no longer be marketed in nonprescription consumer antiseptic wash products, because there was insufficient evidence that they prevent illness better than plain soap and water. The rule covers washes for human skin rather than tool cleaners as a category, but it still deflates the marketing.
"Hotter is always better." The activated-oxygen-bleach finding above says otherwise for microbiology, and materials caution says otherwise for the object. LastObject specifies machine washing up to 60 °C for LastRound, states that fabric softener should not be used because it coats the fibres and reduces absorption, and — on the LastRound refill page — states "Do not use bleach or harsh solvents." Boiling a textile pad sits outside that care specification, and so does the activated-oxygen-bleach route that the laundry literature offers as the substitute for heat. That is a real tension rather than a detail to paper over: the compensation mechanism the hygiene research points to is one the brand's own care page rules out, which leaves temperature, cycle length and detergent enzymes as the levers actually available on this product.
"There is a fixed number of uses." A 2025 study of reprocessed reusable medical devices concluded that the number of cycles at which a device should no longer be used cannot be predetermined, and that end-of-life indicators were predominantly discoloration. That is an analogy from surgical instruments, not a finding about textiles — but the retirement principle it supports, inspect visually and retire on wear and discoloration, is more useful than any cycle count, including the manufacturer's own.
When a reusable pad is the wrong choice
This section is not a formality. There are situations where the honest answer is: not this product.
Active skin infection, open lesions, or broken skin. US state cosmetology regulation draws the reusable/disposable line by material. California's rules state that tools and supplies that contact a client and cannot be disinfected — the list names cotton pads and sponges explicitly — must be disposed of after a single use. Texas defines single-use items as porous, absorbent, rough-surfaced materials that must be thrown away. Both are professional multi-client rules and neither governs what a person may reuse on their own face — but they mark where the licensed trade draws the line on porous materials, and that line is the relevant one when skin is broken or infected. Where skin is compromised, clinical guidance rather than a product page is the applicable source.
Acne-prone skin. The American Academy of Dermatology advises applying acne treatment with the fingertips, because scrubbing with washcloths, sponges and other tools can irritate the skin. That advice is against tools generally. It is not a comparison in which reusable pads lose to disposable ones; both are tools, and neither is what is being recommended.
Shared use. The same body's guidance on brushes says never to share them. Nothing about a washable pad changes that logic.
Acetone and nail polish remover. Aggressive solvents do not belong on a reusable textile, and the brand agrees: LastObject's LastRound refill page states "Do not use bleach or harsh solvents," and its description of LastRound covers water-based products — micellar water, toner, makeup remover, serum, exfoliant. Acetone is not on that list.
Any stretch without laundry access. Travel, hospital stays, dorms without machines. A pad you cannot wash for a week is the uncleaned-sponge scenario, and the fix is a disposable, not a workaround.
Cold-only laundering with enzyme-free detergent and no dryer. That is the one combination the 2025 home-laundering study cited above found wanting. Where that describes the machine and the detergent, the wash rather than the pad is the part carrying the risk.
The care specification, in checkable form
- The LastRound refill page states "Rinse or wash after each use." That is the brand's own care wording for what happens between uses, not a research finding.
- The brand specifies machine washing up to 60 °C, in the mesh laundry bag that comes with the set.
- The brand also states that fabric softener should not be used, because it coats the fibres and reduces absorption.
- The refill page states "Do not use bleach or harsh solvents," which is what puts the activated-oxygen-bleach substitute from the laundry literature outside this product's care specification.
- The refill page names an OEKO-TEX certification. That is a textile certification concerning substances tested in the fabric — not a hygiene test, and not a statement about what any wash removes.
- On drying, the laundering evidence above rather than the product page is the source: moisture — not reuse — is the growth condition.
- On retirement, the reprocessing literature points at inspection for wear and discoloration rather than at a cycle count; LastObject's own figure is approximately 250 wash cycles per pad.
The product, and what it does not solve
LastObject describes LastRound as a set of seven reusable pads, each roughly 7 cm in diameter — which the brand says is the same as a standard disposable round — priced at $16.00 for the Original at LastObject's US store, 18 August 2026, with a larger version at $19.00. LastObject states the material as 30% cotton and 70% lyocell, a wood-derived fibre, machine washable up to 60 °C, and rates each pad at approximately 250 wash cycles; the brand also says one set of seven replaces roughly 1,750 disposable rounds over its lifetime. A refill set is $9.00. Those material, durability, equivalence and cycle figures are LastObject's own and are not independently verified here.

What the material buys is a pad that tolerates a 60 °C wash and comes with a mesh bag, which removes two of the practical excuses for skipping the laundry. What it does not buy is the wash itself. On the evidence above, that is the part that decides the outcome — and it is the part the customer owns.
Limitations of the sources
Collected here rather than repeated paragraph by paragraph; they still matter.
- Beauty-blender study: products were donated rather than randomly sampled, and the sample was UK-only.
- Cosmetic-brush survey: the link between cleaning habits and reported acne, irritation or infections was self-reported and never statistically tied to the cultured samples.
- 2025 face-covering laundering study: fabrics were polyester, nylon and polyester fleece rather than cellulose; makeup and sebum soils were not tested; the number of cycles the textiles survive was not established. Reading it across to a cotton-and-lyocell pad is an analogy, not a measurement on the object in question.
- CDC cleaning guidance: written for hospital instruments processed in validated machines; its log-reduction figures should not be transferred to household use.
- FDA antiseptic-wash rule: the stated basis was missing manufacturer evidence, not proof of uselessness.
- 2025 device-reprocessing study: covered surgical instruments in validated washer-disinfectors and was authored by manufacturer staff.
