WHY MAKE A CHANGE
Why zero waste?
Every year, trillions of single-use plastic products are consumed and thrown away — often ending up on beaches and in oceans harming marine life. What’s more, the current culture of consumption is not sustainable. Extracting and processing raw materials requires an exceptional amount of energy. It also causes a high rate of pollution for very limited use, with many non-biodegradable items ending up in landfills.
Insights behind LastSwab
30,280 Crowdfunding Backers
LastSwab was our very first product, and we launched it on Kickstarter in April 2019. It turned out to be a huge success with more than 19,909 backers on Kickstarter and another extra 10,371 backers on Indiegogo, so a total of 30,280 people helped us bring this product to life.
We felt an overwhelming feeling of gratitude, all these people trusted us to deliver on a promise of building a better world together where single-use would be a thing of the past.
Small Product - Large Problem
We (Isabel, Kåre & Nicolas) had been doing research into how we could leverage our skills as product designers positively for the world - and do our bit to help leave a better world to our children.
The idea for LastSwab started with Isabel reading a research article from the EU Commission. From the article she found that the fourth most found piece of trash in the oceans was single-use cotton swabs. And that we use 550 billion cotton swabs each year! So we set out to find a better solution - and the result was LastSwab.
Community Driven Improvements
Many of our lovely customers have made suggestions for improvements. We never want to settle, but believe that we can always improve. When we moved the production of LastSwab to Europe, we decided to change the thickness of the rod. Many of you felt that the rod of the swab was too thin, so we increased the thickness and strength of the rod, thereby preventing it from bending.

New Version Requested by You
The most requested product by our community has been the safety/baby version, so we set out to do this version. After many sketches, 3D drawings and countless prototypes we finally had a result that we were pleased with. Getting an idea from you and turning it into a great final product that we hope you’ll love and use over and over again, is truly a fantastic feeling. Thanks a lot for sharing your ideas and please keep them coming :)
The Ocean & Why We Care
The idea for LastSwab came from research made by the EU Commission stating that single-use cotton swabs is one of the most common single-use products found in our oceans. We had no idea that single-use swabs is the fourth most found single-use plastic in the ocean and that it had such a negative impact on our world, we felt obligated to find a better solution and that became the LastSwab.
Here are a few of the reasons why we need to take care of our Oceans:
